Diamond AircraftStarting with a powered motor glider in 1985, Diamond Aircraft developed a number of successful airplanes. The most successful currently is the DA42 Twin-Star, which was the first diesel-power twin and is based on the DA40. The DA40 is a four-seat low wing single engine plane made of composite materials and available with traditional avionics as well as the Garmin 1000, which lately became the standard. There are both Avgas and diesel powered versions available.
The DA42 was originally powered with Thielert diesel engines, but after the bankruptcy of Thielert also a Lycoming Avgas, as well as an AustroEngine diesel became available. Due to ist Garmin 1000 glass cockpit and jet-like FADEC engine controls, the DA42 is often used as a trainer for future airline pilots.
